This weekend, many of us tuned in to watch the Masters golf tournament, live from Augusta, Georgia.
Golf’s top names like Rahm, Koepka, Woods, McIlroy and Mickelson were all centre stage for one of the sport’s premier yearly events, with the winner receiving the prized Augusta green jacket and a place in the history books forever.
There are also some unsung heroes on the course that are worth mentioning… the caddies!
Behind every great player is a great caddy. Many have been with their golfer for years, competing in dozens of championships together. They typically earn a percentage of the winnings as their clients achieve their goals.
Golf caddies will also:
- Carry heavy loads
- Provide emotional support
- Develop a strategy & read the green
- Have a bag full of tools, and know which one to use
- Know what lies ahead and be able to share the pros & cons of each decision
- Know where dangers and hazards are lurking
- Give sage advice when needed
- Prepare for the worst conditions
- Have extensive knowledge of the rules
- Know how to help the client out of a bad situation
If this sounds familiar, it’s probably because these are all things you can expect from a great Realtor.
In the real estate industry, there’s an ongoing joke about how everyone is the #1 agent in their office. Some agents LOVE being in the spotlight and taking all the credit. “I sold 100 homes this year!”
Really? Or did you actually ASSIST 100 clients in the purchase and sale of their properties?
It’s important for agents to remember that they are the GUIDE… not the hero.
To use another analogy, the agent is NOT Luke Skywalker… they are Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The Realtor’s job, much like a caddy, is to assist the “hero” in their journey. Movies, television and books are filled with stories of these guides — think about names like Gandalf, Morpheus and Dumbledore.
It’s our clients that take on the home maintenance and costs of home ownership. They sign on the dotted line and make the decisions.
They’re the ones that step up to the tee and hit the ball.
This is an open letter to agents… hand the club to your clients, give them great advice and let them swing the club.
Take off the green jacket and give it to your client.
They need you to be a great caddy in their home buying and home selling journeys, so they can win their own championship.
See you in the clubhouse!
